Compound and complex sentences in Ukrainian

Sentences that consist of two or more parts are called in Ukrainian складні речення (“difficult” or complex sentences in Ukrainian). In English grammar, there are two different terms for those sentences: compound and complex. In this article, I will try to break it down for you to make those “difficult” sentences a bit easier.

Складні речення in Ukrainian can be of two types:

1. Сполучникові (with conjunction)

• • Складносурядні (compound sentences in English)
  • Складнопідрядні (complex sentences in English)

2. Безсполучникові (without conjunction)

Let’s see the types within each group. I will demonstrate each type with some simple examples that are all based on the sentence Іде дощ — It is raining.

 

1.1 Складносурядні речення or Compound sentences in Ukrainian

These are sentences that consist of two or more independent clauses connected with conjunctions like і, а, або, але, etc.

There are 3 main types of складносурядні речення:

Type	Conjunctions	Examples
Єднальні	і (й, та) – and і… і… – both… and… ні… ні… – neither… nor не тільки… а й – not only, but also	Іде дощ і дме вітер. І дощ іде, і сонце світить. Не тільки дощ іде, а й дме сильний вітер.
Протиставні	а – and/but але – but зате, проте, однак – but, however	У Києві йде дощ, а у Львові яка погода? Іде дощ, але це не проблема.
Розділові	або, чи – or то… то… – either… or…	Іде дощ, чи це мені здається? То дощ іде, то світить сонце.

1.2 Складнопідрядні речення or Complex sentences in Ukrainian

These are sentences that consist of one independent clause and one or more subordinate clauses (підрядні частини).

There are various types of складнопідрядні речення. They are all grouped into three main categories.

Складнопідрядні речення з підрядним означальним Complex sentences with Attributive Clause	Attributive clauses perform the function of an attribute and stand after the noun that it modifies. що, який – what, who, which, that (with animate and inanimate nouns) The conjunctive words який (m), яка (f), яке (n), які (pl) in a Subordinate clause may also take different cases.	Дощ, що розпочався позавчора ввечері, досі йде.   Іде дощ, якого ми так довго чекали.
Складнопідрядні речення з підрядним з’ясувальним   Complex sentences with Explanatory Clauses	Subordinate clauses explain the action in the independent clause. що – that хто – who як – how чи – whether and others	Я чую, що іде дощ.   Я слухаю, як іде дощ.   Ти знаєш, чи йде зараз дощ?
Складнопідрядні речення з підрядними обставинними Complex sentences with Adverbial Clauses	Adverbial clauses indicate:   Час (time): коли́ – when по́ки – while до́ки – until, till відко́ли – since відто́ді як – since з тих пір як – since	Коли йде дощ, я люблю сидіти вдома і читати.   Поки йде дощ, ходімо в кав’ярню.   Відколи йде дощ, ми не виходили на вулицю.
	Місце (place) де – where куди́ – where to зві́дки – where from	Дощ іде там, де він потрібен.
	Умова (condition) якщо́ – if якби́ – if, if only	Якщо йде дощ, я трошки запізнюсь.   Якби не йшов дощ, я би приїхала вчасно.
	Причина (cause) тому́ що – because бо – because, as оскі́льки – as far as а́дже – because, since	Я не буду бігати сьогодні, тому що (бо, оскільки, адже) іде дощ.
	Мети (goal) щоб – in order to аби́ – in order to для то́го щоб – in order to	Дощ іде, щоб (аби, для того щоб) росли дерева та рослинки.
	Порівняння (comparing) як – as, like мов, немо́в – like, as if на́че, нена́че – like, as if	Іде сильний дощ, наче (мов) з неба на землю хтось ллє воду з відра.
	Допуст (concession) хоч, хоча́ – although дарма́ що – notwithstanding незважа́ючи на = по́при – in spite of, despite	Я піду на прогулянку, незважаючи на (попри) те, що йде дощ.
	Міра і ступінь (degree) що – that що аж – that	Іде такий сильний дощ, що аж нічого не видно.
	Наслідок (consequence) так що – so that	Іде дощ, так що сьогодні не будемо бігати.

 

2. Безсполучникові речення – Complex sentences without linking words

These sentences consist of clauses that are not connected by any conjunctions, but by punctuation and intonation. Unlike in English where these would be just two separate sentences, this type is very common in Ukrainian.

Some examples of безсполучникові речення with дощ again:

• Іде дощ, віє вітер.
• Іде дощ – сьогодні не будемо бігати.
  Dash is used if the second clause is a result of the first one.
• Погода зіпсувалася: іде дощ, віє сильний вітер.
  A semicolon is used when the second clause explains the first one.
